The 5th Conference of Epidemiological Longitudinal Studies in Europe (CELSE 2010)
13 - 15 October 2010, Paphos, Cyprus
Dear colleagues,
CELSE2010 has received an overwhelming demand for extending their abstract submission deadline, so they have decided to extend the deadline to 31st May. CELSE2010 has already received great interest and response with over 300 abstract submissions for symposiums, oral presentations and posters from all corners of the globe.
Therefore, any longitudinal scientists interested in attending CELSE2010 still have time to submit their research abstracts. Submitted abstracts which are accepted after peer-review will have the opportunity to be included in the international journal 'Longitudinal and Life Course Studies (LLCS)', currently the only journal worldwide that has longitudinal research as its main focus. The LLCS journal will have a 2011 issue devoted to abstracts presented at CELSE2010.
The CELSE2010 conference, scheduled to be held from 13th to 15th October 2010 in Paphos, Cyprus, will focus on medical, psychological, educational and social research derived from longitudinal data.
CELSE2010 has already confirmed the attendance of some of the world's top scientists using longitudinal methods who will deliver keynote speeches, including a Nobel Laureate - Professor James Heckman.

FENS reminder "Deadline on Friday, April 30, 2010 for applying von a Society sponsored Abstract Slots for the SfN Annual Meeting"
FENS is happy to announce that, again, for 2010 FENS was appointed as the unique distributor for slots for entire Europe.
For the past several years the Society for Neuroscience has provided FENS with a number of unique ID numbers (so-called "slots") which allowed some of the FENS members who are not also members of SfN to submit abstracts to the SfN annual meeting and register for the meeting at the member rate. The total number of slots that FENS can distribute in 2010 is 419.
As in the past, FENS will distribute these slots on a first come - first served basis, but also observing geographical distribution and the size of societies.
- Only FENS memberscan apply for a slot. The system will automatically check your FENS membership status on the basis of your email address. In order to avoid problems, please make sure that the email address you use for the slot application will be the one that is saved in the membership directory. Please check the membership directory before starting the slot application.
- The slot is not transmittable i.e. the slot-holder him/herself only is entitled to submit an abstract as first author.
- In order to be eligible for registration at the SfN member rate, you must submit an abstract.
- You will be required to pay a $90 abstract submission fee to SfN.
- Submission of an abstract does not automatically register you for the meeting, you must still register and pay to attend Neuroscience 2010.
The deadline for application is April 30, 2010, 8.00 p.m. CEST
Abstract submission to SfN opens Thursday, April 22, 2010, and closes Thursday, May 13, 5:00 p.m. EDT.
Please note that in the past you may have been able to register at the member rate without submitting an abstract; however, under the recent policy in order to be eligible for registration at the SfN member rate, you must submit an abstract.

Brain Awareness Week
This years Brain Awareness week was successful as ever. The main initiative was this time coordinated by the Hersenstichting, but the Neurofederatie participated in two main events.
Firstly, 26 schools were visited by Dutch neuroscientists who taught 5th and 6st graders about their research. This years event was especially challenging because school that we could not visit last year were given priority. Obviously, these schools are not located at the most convenient locations, but nonetheless we were able to serve them all. A big thank you to those who participated in this event.
A quite different event was organized in Sittard where "Phrenology" was performed."Phrenology" is a composition of neuroscientist Tim Leufkens. The music is inspired by the function of some neural circuits. The performance, by the Philharmonie of Sittard was complemented by graphical work. A small fragment can be found here .

Job description
The Department of Anatomy & Neurosciences of the VU University Medical Center in Amsterdam together with the Department of Cell Biology of the University Medical Center Groningen is seeking applications for a
PhD-student in Neuroscience
Project Title
Tissue Transglutaminase in astrogliosis and oligodendrocyte differentiation: towards improved remyelination
Project outline
Key neuropathological processes in Multiple Sclerosis (MS) are inflammation, demyelination and subsequent axonal damage. When MS progresses, astrogliosis and failure of remyelination are two intermingled neuropathological features that become more evident resulting in neurodegeneration and long-lasting neurological deficits. Astrogliosis is considered asa major mechanical impediment to remyelination and axonal regeneration in MS. Firm interaction of the astrocytes with extracellular matrix proteins is likely to be involved in astrogliosis. Interestingly, tissue Transglutaminase (TG2), a multifunctional, Ca2+dependent enzyme with pleiotropic effects can possibly mediate interactions between astrocytes and the extracellular matrix e.g. fibronectin, and facilitate aggregation of fibronectin. If so, this may impair oligodendrocyte migration and remyelination. Additionally, TG2 can enhance cell differentiation and may possibly play a role in oligodendrocyte differentiation thereby promoting remyelination.
This project aims at better understanding the role of TG2 in astrogliosis and remyelination which we consider is of great importance to improve the pathological and clinical outcome of MS.
Research groups
The vacancy is in the Cellular Neuroscience group, VUmc (dr. A.M.W. van Dam), and the project will be performed in close collaboration with the Membrane Cell Biology group, UMCG (dr. W. Baron). The project forms part of the research program of the Neuroscience Campus Amsterdam.

Postdoc
Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience
Job description
A post-doc position is available to investigate the astrocyte dysfunction in AGS - Aicardi Goutieres syndrome. AGS is a rare autosomal recessive disorder affecting newborns and manifesting as microencephaly, fever, feeding difficulties and severe developmental delay. Neuropathological investigation reveals astrogliosis accompanied by calcifications of the basal ganglia and white matter destruction. Interferon-alpha (IFN-α) production in astrocytes is likely to be involved in the neuropathogenesis of AGS. To further explore the role of astrocytes we will engineer human astrocytes to over-express IFN-α by transfection with expression plasmids or transduction with lentiviral vectors to mimic increased IFN-α production of astrocytes in AGS patients.
